Sofia Roubou

Sofia Roumbou (Greek: Σοφία Ρούμπου, 1947–1 October 2016) was a Greek film, stage and television actress. Roumbou was born in Athens and studied acting at the Drama School of the National Theatre and dance at the Sonia Morianova School. She began taking part in theatrical performances in 1965, when she was still a student at the drama school. Her first roles were in Aristophanes' "The Ecclesiastes" and Sophocles' "Antigone", opposite Anna Synodinou. Her film debut took place in 1969 with the film "The Girl of "17"" directed by Petros Lykas, alongside Kostas Kazakos and Christos Politis, playing a mentally ill young woman, for which she was awarded the Best Actress award at the Thessaloniki Film Festival. She made her television debut in 1977 with the ERT comedy series "Thomas at Colonus" directed by Dimitris Nikolaidis and Vasilis Vlachodimitropoulos alongside Nikos Papanastasiou, Elena Nathanael and Vasilis Tsivilikas, while in the same year she appeared in another ERT social series "The Pantheons" directed by Vasilis Georgiadis alongside Katia Dandoulaki, Angelos Antonopoulos, Lykourgos Kallergis and Phaedonas Georgitsis. She also appeared in television theatrical performances, as part of the show "Monday's Theatre" that aired on ERT in the 1970s and 1980s. Sofia Roumbou was the wife of cinematographer and editor Nikos Kavoukidis, with whom she had a daughter, also an actress, Maria Kavoukidou. She died in the early hours of the morning in hospital at the age of 69, where she had been hospitalized for a long time. She was buried at the "Athens 1st Cemetery" on 3 October 2016.
